What is SkyPilot and what are its core objectives?

2025-09-10 1.5 K

SkyPilot is an open source framework developed by the Sky Computing Lab at the University of California, Berkeley, designed to help users efficiently run AI and batch processing tasks in multi-cloud environments. Its core objectives include the following three key aspects:

  • Multi-Cloud Compatibility: Support for over 14 cloud service providers (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure) and Kubernetes, breaking single cloud vendor lock-in.
  • Cost optimization: Automatically selects the most cost-effective cloud region or instance type through intelligent resource scheduling algorithms, enabling 3-6.5x cost savings.
  • Simplified deployment: Provides a unified YAML/Python interface that allows users to deploy across clouds without modifying code, and automatically handles failure recovery and data synchronization.

The framework is particularly suitable for computationally intensive tasks such as machine learning model training, hyperparameter tuning, etc. It has received 7k+ starred tags on GitHub since its release in 2022, and has accumulated more than a million downloads.
