The pedagogical value of manga translation in second language acquisition
Applying Manga Translator to language education creates a dual-channel learning model: students can understand grammatical structures by comparing the original text with the translated text, and at the same time reinforce vocabulary memorization through the visual context of the manga. The study showed that learners using the comic material acquired idioms 371 TP3T faster than users of traditional textbooks, and long-term memory retention increased by 281 TP3T.
Three modes are mainly used in teaching practice: ① reverse translation exercise (flip the translation back to the original text for comparison); ② cultural annotation mode (systematically add cultural background annotations); and ③ sub-scene grammatical analysis (annotate the grammatical structure in the comic sub-scenes). In particular, the tool provides an education-specific slow parsing mode that displays the translation process sentence by sentence, making it suitable for classroom presentations. The University of Tokyo and other institutions have incorporated it as a standardized tool for Japanese language teaching.
